Semen Cryopreservation (commonly called sperm banking) is a procedure to preserve sperm cells. Semen can be used successfully immediately after cryopreservation. For human sperm the longest reported successful storage is 21 years. It can be used for sperm donation, or as a means of preserving fertility.
Indications of Semen Preservation:
- Preserving fertility for men undergoing vasectomy
- Men diagnosed with cancer but not yet begun chemotherapy or radiotherapy
- Treatments that may compromise their fertility such as, surgery or drugs
